EMDR + IFS Practicum Group
Skills Practice | Offered Periodically
The EMDR + IFS Practicum Group is a hands-on, skills-based learning experience designed for clinicians seeking structured practice in applying elements of the EMDR and Internal Family Systems (IFS) integration model in a small, supported group setting.
This offering is distinct from demo groups and consultation groups. The emphasis here is on practice, repetition, choice, and feedback rather than observation or case consultation.
About the Practicum Group
This practicum is designed to support clinicians in building confidence and fluency with EMDR + IFS interventions through direct practice with peers. Participants practice on one another in a contained, consent-based environment while I observe, guide, and offer real-time feedback.
The focus is not on depth-oriented therapy work or completing full EMDR protocols, but on learning how to apply the model clearly, thoughtfully, and effectively in real clinical moments.
This group is especially supportive for clinicians who feel they understand the model conceptually and want reps to reduce hesitation and increase confidence.
How the Practicum Group Is Structured
Each practicum cohort comprises 3 participants and meets for 3 sessions, each lasting 90 minutes. The structure is designed to give each participant opportunities to practice in multiple roles over time, while remaining flexible and responsive to the group’s needs.
Each meeting follows a consistent format:
10 minutes: Landing exercise and orientation
60 minutes: Live practicum (participants practice EMDR + IFS interventions with each other)
20 minutes: Debrief, feedback, and open Q&A
Participants rotate roles across sessions, practicing as the therapist, experiencing the client role in a limited, consent-based manner, and observing peers. I remain actively involved throughout, providing guidance, reflections, and real-time clinical feedback.
What You’ll Practice
Rather than following a fixed curriculum, the practicum is choice-based and clinician-driven. Roles are determined in advance of the cohort, so each participant has the opportunity to take turns as therapist, client, and observer across the three sessions.
At each meeting, the participant in the therapist role names what they want support practicing that day. The focus of the practicum is always on the therapist’s learning, with practice and feedback oriented toward developing clarity, confidence, and clinical judgment.
Common practice areas include:
Parts mapping and Phase 1 conceptualization
Using the IFS 6 Fs with target parts
Working with protective parts and negotiating consent
Pacing and sequencing within EMDR phases
Preparing for or beginning healing steps
Therapist language, presence, and moment-to-moment decision-making
Participants are not expected to build skills sequentially across sessions. Each meeting offers space to practice what feels most relevant or sticky right now.
Choice, Consent, and Flexibility
Choice and consent are central to this practicum.
Participants are never required to go deep or share more than they want to.
If someone is having difficulty being in the client role, we can work with that part, shift roles, or adjust the structure.
If needed, I may step in as the client so participants can continue practicing therapist skills without pressure.
The goal is skill development and confidence, not personal therapy or performance.
Important Clarification
This practicum is structured to provide each participant with opportunities to practice in different roles over time. No one is expected to be “the client” for extended or depth-oriented work.
This is a training and skills-practice group and does not count toward EMDRIA consultation hours.
