The Integrated EMDR + IFS Model: Level 1
A structured, relational approach to integrating Internal Family Systems into all phases of the EMDR protocol.
EMDR is one of the most powerful trauma treatments we have.
For many clinicians, there are moments when it starts to feel rigid. Procedural. Too cold for the kind of clients they sit with, and sometimes, for the type of therapist they are.
This training is designed for clinicians who seek to preserve EMDR’s efficacy and structure while incorporating greater relational responsiveness, informed consent, and nuance into the work.
Rather than layering parts work on top of EMDR in an ad-hoc way, this course teaches a coherent integration model that supports clinical decision-making from Phase 1 through Phase 8.
CE: The live Zoom events include 18 EMDRIA and NBCC CE, and the on-demand version includes 13 EMDRIA and NBCC CE.
Who This Training Was Designed For
This course is designed for EMDR-trained clinicians who find themselves thinking:
“EMDR would be such a good fit for this client — if only we could get into Phase 4.”
“We get into reprocessing, but it’s block after block after block.”
“My client wants trauma healing, but EMDR feels too intense for their system.”
“I can sense protectors are getting in the way, but I don’t know how to work with them without abandoning the protocol.”
“I believe in EMDR. I know it works. And sometimes it just feels too rigid, too protocol-driven, for the complexity of the systems I’m working with.”
If you regularly encounter protective responses that prevent targeting, interrupt reprocessing, or stall Phase 4, this training is for you.
This course is also a fit for clinicians who:
Appreciate EMDR’s healing power and want it to feel more relational, responsive, and humane
Are interested in parts work or IFS but don’t have the time, access, or desire to complete a full IFS Institute Level 1
Already use IFS (through IFSI or other training pathways) and want a clear, structured way to integrate it into EMDR
Love EMDR and do not want to abandon it, but want to expand its accessibility for clients whose systems struggle with standard exposure-based approaches
This training does not ask you to replace EMDR with another model.
It teaches you how to work with protectors so that EMDR can actually happen.
If you’d like a deeper explanation of why and how these models work so well together, you can read more about my approach to EMDR–IFS integration here.

Prerequisites & Readiness
Completion of an EMDRIA-approved EMDR Basic Training is required.
This course assumes you already understand:
The 8 phases of EMDR
Standard EMDR protocols and clinical flow
If you have not yet completed EMDR Basic Training, you’ll need to do so before enrolling. I am an EMDRIA-approved provider, and my EMDRIA-Approved EMDR Basic Training meets this prerequisite.
If you completed EMDR training some time ago and feel rusty, I recommend my On-Demand EMDR Refresher before attending. I do not reteach core EMDR fundamentals in this course.
You do not need prior formal training in IFS to attend.
If you are new to parts work, I strongly recommend completing my Free 90-Minute IFS Overview beforehand. This will orient you to core concepts and language so you can focus on integration rather than learning a new model from scratch.
What You’ll Learn
This training focuses on using IFS strategically to support EMDR, rather than reacting to blocks once they appear.
Phase 1: Preparing the System
You’ll learn how to:
Identify and work with protective parts in advance, rather than encountering them for the first time in Phase 4
Get internal permission on the front end so reprocessing can proceed more smoothly
Lay a relational foundation that increases safety, trust, and readiness
Titrate exposure for clients who want trauma healing but struggle with EMDR’s intensity
Phase 2: Rethinking Resourcing
You’ll learn how to:
Use parts-focused alternatives to traditional EMDR resourcing
Address situations where standard resourcing does not work, backfires, or creates another barrier
Help clients access safety through relationship and internal consent, rather than technique alone
Phases 3–4: Making Reprocessing Relational
You’ll learn how to:
Adjust assessment questions to be more relational and system-aware
Integrate IFS healing steps directly into Phase 4 reprocessing
Navigate blocked or looping processing with more nuance and less force
Support deeper processing without overriding protectors or pushing the system
Phases 5–8: Deepening Integration and Follow-Through
You’ll also learn how to strengthen the later phases of EMDR, so the work feels integrated, embodied, and complete:
Enhance installation (Phase 5) by tracking parts’ responses to positive cognition
Integrate body awareness throughout the entire process, rather than waiting until Phase 6
Use somatic cues to guide pacing and titration across phases
Expand body scan work (Phase 6), so it becomes a continuous source of information
Offer flexible, responsive closure options (Phase 7) when standard techniques don’t fit
Deepen reevaluation (Phase 8) by assessing system-wide change, protector shifts, and readiness for future work
Across these phases, the emphasis is on integration rather than completion, helping clients leave sessions more coherent, oriented, and internally connected.
It’s important to name explicitly: Standard EMDR works really well for many clients, especially those with single-incident or “textbook” PTSD.
This training is designed to expand your range of clients for whom systems-level preparation is required for EMDR to work effectively.

Something I’m So Excited to Share…
My book is out NOW!
Treating Trauma with EMDR and IFS
This book has been a true labor of love – written for therapists who want to confidently integrate EMDR and IFS to support their clients’ healing. It’s the first full-length book dedicated to this integration, and I can’t wait for you to have it in your hands.
I wrote it to offer practical guidance, deep insights, and real-world application to help you show up for your clients with clarity, skill, and compassion.
More About the Course Curriculum
Understand Parts Language
Learn the foundational components of Internal Family Systems (IFS) and how to speak using “parts language.” Parts exist within us all, and they always have a positive intent, even if that may not be readily apparent based on their actions. Parts organize themselves to protect, care for, and motivate the person.
Goals of the Integrated Model
The integrated approach helps the client develop insight and understanding regarding their thoughts, feelings, and behavior, restoring trust in the client’s inner system, assisting them in developing a stronger sense of identity, healing wounds, releasing negative beliefs, and reorganizing their internal system.
The Integrated Approach: A New Lens
The integrated approach offers a new lens to conceptualize a client’s experience. It is non-pathologizing and honors their protective system, which can often feel bypassed in standard protocol EMDR. We slow the process down to empower the client to make lifelong changes.
Well-Protected Systems
Well-protected systems are prevalent, especially with complex PTSD or relational trauma. We focus on the intention of the part, not the actual symptom or behavior of the part. In The EMDR and IFS Model, we enter the system through its protective layers instead of immediately targeting traumatic memories or wounds.
Knowing Self
In IFS, the Self is our most authentic sense of who we are and is the source of healing just like the AIP. Everyone has a Self; some just have less access to it. Self-energy does not have a plan, agenda, or strategy but rather a strong desire to heal. Throughout the training, therapists learn to access their own Self-energy and rely on the client’s Self for healing.
Parts-Focused Interweaves
The integrated model provides clinicians with strategic ways to utilize parts-focused interweaves during phase four reprocessing. The protocol shifts from the idea of a “blocking belief” to a more compassionate “protective drive.” We also shy away from the “cognitive” component of these interweaves to prevent inviting in managers.
Tuition is $395 for the 3-day course.
