Inside the Session: November Cohort

R.A. — Developmental Trauma, Addiction & Codependency

Follow R.A. across four therapy sessions and watch how EMDR + IFS integration unfolds with a client navigating complex attachment wounds, longstanding addictive patterns, codependency, and the challenge of developing a clearer sense of his own identity, needs, and agency.

R.A.’s history includes childhood emotional neglect and enmeshment, being made responsible for his mother’s emotions at an early age, more than 30 years of sobriety alongside other ongoing compulsive behaviors, and a current divorce that has illuminated longstanding relational patterns.

Rather than seeing a single snapshot of therapy, you’ll follow the same person across four sessions and watch how the case conceptualization, parts map, treatment priorities, and clinical direction evolve as new information emerges.

What You’ll See

Across the series, you’ll have the opportunity to observe:

  • The impact of childhood emotional neglect, enmeshment, and early responsibility for a parent’s emotional well-being.

  • Longstanding addictive and compulsive patterns, including a history of substance use and ongoing struggles involving food, sex, gambling, and other forms of compulsive coping.

  • More than 30 years of sobriety alongside the continued presence of other protective strategies.

  • Codependency and the recreation of early relational dynamics within an adult marriage.

  • The difficulty of separating from relationships even when established patterns are no longer working.

  • Significant difficulty identifying personal wants, needs, and preferences after a lifetime organized around caring for others.

  • Questions surrounding ADHD, possible autistic traits, and their potential intersection with trauma and attachment.

  • How I conceptualize an internal system shaped by chronic caregiving, relational survival strategies, compulsive behaviors, and difficulty prioritizing oneself.

  • How I identify potential EMDR targets while working with the protective system through an IFS-informed lens.

  • How treatment begins to support greater access to identity, agency, internal needs, and authentic choice.

Follow the Work Over Time

You’ll follow R.A. through four consecutive therapy sessions with the same person.

This longitudinal format allows you to see something that is difficult to capture in a traditional demonstration: how our understanding of a client changes.

You’ll see earlier sessions inform later ones, watch parts and patterns reappear, and observe how treatment planning shifts as we learn more about R.A.’s internal system.

More Than the Live Demonstration

After each session, I rewatch the demonstration and turn it into an additional teaching experience.

Your course materials will include:

  • Four complete demonstration recordings.

  • On-screen clinical commentary highlighting important interventions, shifts, and decision points.

  • Detailed parts maps reflecting how I conceptualize R.A.’s system.

  • Post-session clinical debrief videos explaining what I was tracking, what became clearer after reviewing the session, and where I would consider going next.

  • Live Q&A and discussion following each demonstration.

The goal is not simply to let you watch therapy. It is to help you understand what I am seeing, tracking, and considering as the therapist.
